VJTI Mumbai History

VJTI Mumbai was founded in 1887 as Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute with two departments — the Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering and the Ripon Textile School. It expanded steadily, adding Electrical Engineering (1903), Technical & Applied Chemistry (1906), and Sanitary Engineering (1913).

In 1913, VJTI was recognised as the Central Technological Institute of Bombay Province, initially located in Byculla in a building donated by Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit. After the First World War, in 1923, the college relocated to its current campus in Matunga — a move facilitated by the Government and the Bombay Mill Owners Association.

In the late 1940s, VJTI introduced bachelor's degree programs in Textile, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. On Republic Day 1997, Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute was renamed Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) in tribute to the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
